
Queen Latifah was conceived Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah was the second child born to Lance and Rita Owens. She is most famous for her social activism, acting abilities and ability to rhyme. Aged 8 at the time her Muslim cousin gave her the name Latifah which means "delicate" as well as "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah began singing in the choir of the Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" as the character of Dorothy in a play of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Her mother was a key influencer; she was in touch with the children and music. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey, dubbed D.J. Mark the 45 King, invited her to join school dance.
